HOUSTON:
The road to the World Championship for the Yankees passes not only through the Houston Astros but more specifically, Justin Verlander. If the Yankees want to win their first Major League Baseball since 2009, they may need to find a way to beat Verlander - presumed ALC Young winner of the year - at least once in October.
Verlander, 39 years old, may be one of the best of the best shooters ever. After returning from a Tommy John operation that set him back nearly two full seasons, he went 18-5 with a 1.76 E.R.A. Over 177 shots over the regular season. He has 244 career wins, 3,199 hits, a Rookie of the Year award, Player of the Year award, two Cy Young Awards and a World Series Ring.

The Seattle Mariners' previous round sweep allowed the Astros the luxury of lining up their crew strategically to take on the Yankees. By scheduling the right-hand Verlander for Game 1 of the A.L.'s best championship series. Which kicked off Wednesday at Minute Maid Park, the Astros could turn once again on a regular break for a potential match-5.

The Yankees could lose both games that Verlander started and still win the series, but that highly narrows the margin of error for the AFC Champions League seeded meeting. In Verlander's first rift, the Yankees held onto their own but were unable to overthrow him. He allowed in one round and hit 12 in six, setting the stage for the Astros' rackets to explode in a 4-2 win.
Dusty Becker:
"He is not only physically powerful, which you can see, but he's strong mentally," said Dusty Becker, the Astros manager, adding that Verlander was better off the pitch from 80th to 104 yard than he was earlier in the game. “This guy has mental toughness. When he’s frustrated and you seem to be causing him problems, this guy can call him.”
Verlander:
Verlander started very slowly, but he left the match, the score was attached, 1-1. In the down of half of the sixth inning, first team Astros player Yuli Gurrell and quarterback Chas McCormick were qualified to drive singles home from Yankees right-hand Clark Schmidt. "I felt they had the steam early on as an insult to me, but I felt like I could put it back on my side, and just kind of put pressure on them once that happened," Verlander said. “Thank God our boys came in with some big hits and the bulls did their job as they usually do. This is how we won a lot of ball games.”
Guriel said of Verlander:
"It's very important to us," Gurrell said of Verlander. "Everyone knows he's our main bowler, and coming out that way gives us a lot of confidence." And he later added, "He's a fantastic footballer, at that age and the way he does, it's impressive."
